I’ve always been fascinated by the concept of luck, especially since it has eluded me with an uncanny vengeance. And for that reason alone, I am ready to believe in the existence of lady luck. Just like a woman to hold a grudge against me!
But now, after having read the stories of these people, I’ve become even more staunch in my beliefs. While philosophers may debate on the existence of luck for the next two centuries, I know it to be an unshakeable truth. How else can you explain what happened to these guys?
Ann Hodges – the only person to have been Hit by a Meteorite…and Lived!
Some might consider being hit by a meteorite from outer space an act of bad luck. But you see, I am an optimist and I always look at the glass and say “half full”. In this case, isn’t this woman incredibly lucky to have survived this alien attack and lived to tell her story?
In November 1954, Anne Hodges was snoozing on her couch when a meteorite crashed the roof of her house. Considering that she escaped with only an injured hip, I’d say lady luck had turned on a million watt smile just for her.
Violet Jessop – on board the three Sisters – Olympic, Titanic, and Britannic
Violet Jessop travelled on all three sister ships
Talk about luck, man! If this doesn’t prove it, what does?
Violet Jessop was an ocean liner stewardess and nurse, who survived all three the disastrous sinkings of sister ships RMS Titanic (in 1912), HMHS Britannic (in 1916) and RMS Olympic, when it collided with the HMS Hawke in 1911.
Not only was Violet on board all three ships when they sank, she also managed to escape all three without so much as a scratch. Beat that if you can! If only her luck could have prevented the ships from sinking at all…
Roy Sullivan – Got struck by lightning not one, two or three, but 7 times!!
This Virginian Park Ranger holds the unbeatable record for being struck by lightning 7 times in 25 years. Where’s the luck in that you are bound to ask. Well if you take into account the fact that he survived all these attacks, you’ll get the drift of what I am trying to point to you. Furthermore, what are the odds of being struck by lightning so many times – 22 septillion to one (That’s 22 followed by 24 zeros). Lady Luck has a full time job around this chap, I say!
Tsutomu Yamaguchi – survived the only two nuclear attacks on this planet
This guy sure takes the cake for strangest and most bizarre luck possible – but thankfully, in a good way, depending on how you look at it. Tsutomu Yamaguchi was in both Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the bombings and yet what killed him was stomach cancer 65 years later – no connection I assure you!
He was on a business trip in Hiroshima when the city was attacked and survived the attack with temporary blindness and ruptured ear drums. He returned home – to where else but Nagasaki where after three days, the city was attacked when Tsutomu Yamaguchi was in the process of recounting the explosion in Hiroshima to his boss. Each time, he was no further than 3 km from ground zero.
I have proved my point and rest my case. Luck exists for sure. Now whether you believe it or not is up to you!
